Running the bracket

List the entrants in seed order, strongest first, or press Shuffle for a random draw. Choose the format, then press a name to send it through; press it again to undo. If you change an earlier result, later results that depended on it are cleared. The bracket is saved in this browser, so you can close the page between rounds.

Seeding and byes

The bracket has the next power of two of slots: 8 for 6 entrants, 16 for 11. Standard seeding pairs seed 1 with the lowest seed, 2 with the second lowest and so on, and places them so that 1 and 2 can only meet in the final, and the top four only from the semi-finals. Empty slots are byes and go to the top seeds, who start in round two.

Single or double elimination

In single elimination one loss ends a run, and n entrants play n − 1 matches. In double elimination the first loss drops a player into the losers' bracket and a second loss ends it; the two bracket winners meet in the grand final. With the reset option, if the losers' side wins that final a second match decides the title, because only then has the other side lost twice.

Questions

How many matches will we play?

Single elimination: one fewer than the number of entrants, plus one for a third-place playoff. Double elimination: 2n − 2, or 2n − 1 when the grand final reset is needed.

Can I print it?

Yes. Print gives a clean landscape copy of the bracket with the results so far, ready to pin up or fill in by hand.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes. Tab to a name and press Enter or Space to mark the winner. The arrow keys move up and down a round and across to the next one.
